iCarbonX Pharmaceutical Initiates Phase I Clinical Study of Antimicrobial Peptide Drug Candidate iCAMP016

On May 8, 2026, the initiation meeting for the Phase I clinical study of iCAMP016, an antimicrobial peptide drug candidate developed by iCarbonX Pharmaceutical, was successfully held at the Phase I Clinical Trial Research Unit of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital.

The study, titled “A Single-Center, Randomized, Double-Blind, Single-Dose Escalation, Placebo-Controlled Phase I Clinical Study to Evaluate the Safety, Tolerability, and Pharmacokinetic Characteristics of iCAMP016 Antimicrobial Peptide Drug Candidate in Healthy Adult Female Volunteers,” officially commenced.

The initiation of this study marks the transition of iCAMP016 into the clinical research stage. The first indication of iCAMP016 is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). Going forward, iCarbonX Pharmaceutical will continue advancing the clinical development and indication expansion of this product, focusing on female reproductive tract infections and microbiome-related diseases.

Multi-Party Collaboration Ensures the Standardized Implementation of Clinical Research

The study is conducted at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital as the clinical research center. Professor Xiaodong Zhu, Director of the Phase I Clinical Trial Unit, and Professor Qingyu Zhang, former Director of the Phase I Clinical Trial Unit, serve as the principal investigators.

The initiation meeting was attended by clinical researchers including Chief Physician Xueru Song and Dr. Shuwei Zhao, along with members of the Phase I clinical trial team responsible for drug administration, biological sample collection and processing, drug management, and other key study procedures.

Representatives from the sponsor iCarbonX Pharmaceutical, CRO partner Tianjin Kaino, and SMO partner Tianjin Huinuo Medical also participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, all parties conducted in-depth discussions on key aspects of the clinical study, including the study protocol, investigational product management, biological sample management, informed consent procedures, GCP compliance, and project implementation. Consensus was reached on critical areas including participant safety and rights protection, safety monitoring, trial process execution, sample collection and handling, data recording, and quality control, laying a solid foundation for the standardized and efficient implementation of the clinical study.

AI + Peptide Chip Technology Accelerates Antimicrobial Peptide Drug Translation

iCAMP016 vaginal gel is a Class I innovative drug candidate developed by iCarbonX Pharmaceutical based on the integration of AI technology and peptide chip platforms. The program received clinical trial approval from the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) on December 17, 2025, and is being developed for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis.

The initiation of clinical research represents an important milestone as iCAMP016 advances from preclinical studies toward clinical translation.

Antimicrobial peptides are a class of functional peptides with antimicrobial activity. They typically exert their effects by targeting key structures of microorganisms, such as cell membranes. Compared with traditional antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides feature unique mechanisms of action and broad development potential, attracting increasing attention in areas including drug-resistant infections, localized anti-infective therapies, and microbiome-related diseases.

According to preclinical research results, iCAMP016 targets key phospholipid components of pathogen cell membranes, disrupts biofilm structures, and demonstrates broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.

The design of iCAMP016 also considers the local vaginal microbiome environment, aiming to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms while minimizing potential disruption to beneficial microbial communities. This approach provides a potential new solution for female reproductive tract infections and microbiome imbalance-related diseases, including bacterial vaginosis, with the goal of achieving more precise and microbiome-friendly therapeutic strategies.

Advancing Women’s Health Through Safety-Focused Clinical Development

This Phase I clinical study will be conducted in healthy adult female volunteers. The primary objective is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of iCAMP016 vaginal gel following a single administration. Secondary objectives include evaluating its pharmacokinetic characteristics and observing changes in vaginal microbiota and secretions after administration.

The study adopts a single-center, randomized, double-blind, single-dose escalation, placebo-controlled design, with a planned enrollment of 40 healthy adult female participants.

The initiation of the Phase I clinical study of iCAMP016 vaginal gel represents a significant milestone in the advancement of iCarbonX Pharmaceutical’s innovative drug pipeline. The company will strictly follow national regulatory requirements and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, working closely with clinical research centers, CROs, SMOs, and other partners to ensure participant safety and rights while advancing the clinical study with high quality.

Looking ahead, iCarbonX Pharmaceutical will continue leveraging its silicon-based peptide chip technology and Digital Molecular AI platform to advance antimicrobial peptide drug discovery and clinical translation. By expanding applications in women’s health and infectious diseases, the company aims to accelerate innovative drug development and deliver more precise and patient-friendly next-generation therapeutic solutions.
